Lost and Found

In this post we will list those classmates that we have not been able to find, those that are "found" and those that have already sent in registrations. Please help us find the "lost" people. We want to do our best to contact each classmate. Feel free to post information here or contact Linda or Margo with contact informaton. We will try to update this every week or two as we get new information. Be sure to check back often.

Does anyone know where Richard Blattner, Tim Foster, or Jon Bakalar are?

Anonymous said...

Were they cute????I'm going to look them up in the yearbook....if they were cute...I'll look harder for them....if not..well

StephanieWJ said...

Unless he has moved recently, Jon Bakalar is living in Johnson County, KS. Jon's niece and nephew attended the school where I am the assistant principal. I did not see Jon, but Jon's mom, Mrs. Marge Bakalar our teacher at TWHS, came to school activities often. I visited with her many times. I'll see if I can get contact information for Jon. (To anonymous - All three guys were very cute if I recall.)

Has the reunion committee heard of www.peoplefinders.com? If you type in name, age, city, or state it kicks out list of people with that name and possible relatives. Just an idea.... jc

I may be having a "senior moment" here, but I think that I remember my mother doing an interview of a (medical)Dr. Jon Bakalar some many years ago when she worked for various polling companies. She had one for doctors on some subject or other and I saw that name on her list. I don't think that I'm making this up. She did interviews in northeast Kansas including Topeka. I asked her after the interview if this person could have been the person that went to TWHS (ie. age, description, etc.) She said it could have been.
At the 30th reunion Kathy Waldock told me that Linda Orten was a missionary in someplace like Peru (or Chile??) and that even though she was listed as unfind-able, Kathy had e-mailed her just a few weeks before. Deb C. just told me that the information about Linda being a missionary is in the 20th reunion book.
Some of these people's (on the missing list) parents still live in the same place that they did when we were in highschool.

Janet Z...email me at neffy@cox.net if you know which missing classmates have parents that still live at the same place, that would be a BIG help..

JanetZ..if you are who I think you are e-mail me too..my mom's still mad about our day at Lake Shawnee when they thought we ran off with boys to Kansas City! Like we would ever have done that!

Didn't know I was lost until I received a phone call from Terry Brumm on 3/8/08. Kirk Nystrom knew where I was through his association with my parents.

Before his death, Bill Trickett and I were in regular contact so he and his wife, Nancy, always knew where I was and what I was doing.

Not yet sure I'll make the reunion but I'd sure like to be there. Anyone who wants to contact me, feel free to do so. My E-mail is:

We seem to have lost our "In Memory" section. Was it removed from the website? I had a strange question, don't mean to be morbid or anything. Just curious. At the "Rememberance" ceremony you plan to have will there be any information available on how we lost our beloved classmates, like health issues, Viet Nam, accident, etc.? I know others would like to know what happened. I just tears me up that we're losing some so soon.

Anonymous said...

anonymous, the "In Memory" section has moved to window 2 of the website since the photo section was added. To get to it scroll clear down to the bottom of window 1 (main website view) and click on older blogs. The "In Memory" section will be at the top. I thought the same thing myself until I tried clicking on older blogs at the bottom the other day. Jim C

I don't think it's unusual to wonder what happened to our classmates. If we have information we will post it at the reunion. If anyone knows what happened to someone please let us know. I'm glad you "found" the "In Memory" post. As the blog grows there is no way that I'm aware of, to keep it all on the same page. I did write in the Greetings section to click on "Older Posts" for more information. Be sure to at least skim sections you have already read as I may add new info as necessary. Again, thanks for your suggestions...we'll do our best. TerryD

Anonymous, Paula McKenzie was killed in a jeep rollover accident at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico just a few years after graduating from West. Kent Weeks lost a battle with cancer during 2007 in the Chicago area. God bless them both. Only two I know about in the "In Memory" section.

Phil was last known in Jonesboro, GA. I looked up "Kansas" on the web

Neffy and Charlie T. – I came across a “gem” of a find. (It’s amazing the stuff I save) Thought it might be helpful in locating classmates. If you are interested I would be happy to forward to you via email the “ 1967-1968 Topeka West Student Directory” which contains names and addresses of all students attending West at the time. Maybe some of the parents are still living at those addresses. My parents still are.
You’ll have to see it. It’s a hoot with all the old ads posted – a lot of the businesses are defunct now, but it sure brings back memories. AND you’ll get a laugh at the phone #’s. You’d think we were using old crank telephones back then.

I also have a copy of the 20th Reunion booklet the committe put together back then, if that would help in anyway. But I bet some of you still have yours and have utilized it in the search effort.

Let me know who to send the Directory to and the email address. I’ll scan it at this end and it will come as a pdf file. Hope that works at your end.

Here’s my email at work so you can contact me: debbie.crawford@ffic.com

You might want to take Mary McCoy off your "lost" list. She's posted her bio on another part of the blog. Her adopted brother was Bob Pullan.

Two of the people that I thought their parents would still live in the same place have been "found". My mother still has her same address as does DebC's mom, but you found Deb long ago. Her student directory and 20th Reunion book are better information for that than I have. She's awesome with the details.

I don't remember a Jay Zuercher --- you'ld think that I'd know a person who's name ended in Z since we sat in alpha order in class so often. And that's a different name. The Zercher (photo store) family lives in Topeka. Could the spelling you have be a typo??? I noticed that Caroline Cochner's name looked like it was misspelled on a previous list (guess since you've found her, I can ask her).

In the 20th Reunion info book, Keith Taylor said he was a helicopter mechanic/pilot for an oil exploration company. If someone knew which company then, we might be able to track him -- or see if the oil busines has some kind of directory(s). Licensed pilots have to be registered with the FAA do they not?

Henry Haines' brother is Robby Haines. He was a couple of years older and the Senior class president in our sophomore or junior year. DebC used to have some kind of a mantra that she repeated about what a hunk Robby was. She might have some detail tucked in her perverse little brain about them. I think that their dad was a shrink at Menningers (Maybe?) and they might have gone to our church. Deb???

Carol Jean Russell went to Capper and (probably) Sheldon elementary --- how else would I remember her middle name? They called her Carol Jean then. I don't know who Mallory is, must be part of a married name. Say, are the marriage license records public documents in Kansas? Ask Tim Carkauff. He's a lawyer they say. He should know or could find out what kind of research you can do in public records and how complicated it is. In Colorado, you can get alot of what's public on line from government websites. However, many many records are now confidential.

P.S. TerryD it would never have occurred to either of us to run off to KC with boys or do anything else that we didn't tell our mothers we were doing (well, mostly), at least not that exciting. Maybe I should have been friends with your mother, she sounds like a lot of fun!!! She had some pretty good ideas back then. She was sure mad at us though. And what I remember most is a horrible sunburn from laying on that dock at Lake Shawnee. It was my mom's fault. She just couldn't find the turn off to pick us up. That could never have happened in the day of the cell phone. We've come a long way, baby.

Sidra Fluke was working for Blue Cross & Blue Shield in Topeka years back. I know her mom worked there also. Hope this may help.

JanetZ..the mispellings on the list came about when I was left with the responsibility while Neffy drank margaritias in San Ant.( I'm an awful speller and have no attention to detail unless it involves accessories) so I think she needs to take it back...I'm too busy with other important matters like feathers and glitter and cowgirl proms!!

Alright JZ - You weren’t suppose to share that hollowed secret about Robbie Haines. Actually my perverse little brain that you refer to has NO recollection of a crush (Nothing personal Robbie, though you were nice looking) I do remember us making fun of the fact that Robbie seemed to be involved in everything and we were trying to figure out who to get to do some project at school or church (yes he went to our church)and we started chanting – “Well, there’s Robbie Haines, and then, THERE’S. . Robbie Haines, and then we could always ask . . .. Robbie Haines” and on and on we went. Sound familiar ??

I told you Deb's memory is faultless. That is exactly what happened. Actually, Henry was our Senior class president, too, if I recall correctly.

Jake, wasn't Henry a tennis guy???? or golf or both??? You mentioned him in your bio. Have you kept in touch with him?

My point about Robbie was that might be a lead. If he was into everything, maybe he's in charge of something in Kansas. I heard a story about their dad some years after graduation. It seems that he was head of some part of the Kansas correctional department or the Kansas division of the federal corrections and some psychiatric patient inmate had taken a gun from a guard and was holding a whole cell block at bay. Dr. Haines (the story goes) drove 70 miles out to the facility (which makes me think it was Leavenworth and, therefore federal) and walked right in to the guy's cell, took the gun out of his hands and turned around and drove back to Topeka. Now that's my best version of something that was second or third hand about 20 years ago or more ----> but if anyone can remember Dr. Haines' first name, you might be able to find him either through the State of Kansas personell (or retirement) or where ever Menningers went when they left here.
I assume that the Henry Haines at:
