Following graduation from Topeka West I left Topeka to follow my dreams. As most of you may recall the Topeka Free Fair came to the fairgrounds and it was an event to look forward to every year. Attending that fair with all of my friends was where I got my inspiration join the circus. I started as an assistant to the animal caregivers which means I shoveled poop. I can tell you that cleaning up after the elephants is no easy task and my arms quickly became very very strong. When I was finished with my shift each night....I would sneak into the tents and practice on the trapeze and found that due to my amazing arm strength that I was quite good at it. Within a few years I had my own " act " and top billing as " The Fantasy in the Sky". I had many great years andloved the life of a circus performer. I marred many times but sadly all ended in divorce. As you can imagine being in the circus gives a girl lots of opportunities to meet interesting men....and I could never just settle for very long. Among my many husbands was one Ringmaster ( too bossy), two clowns ( they're not so funny to live with every day), one Bearded Lady ( trust me " she " was NOT a lady) and my favorite " Jack, the Human Cannon Ball" -- he met a sad end when someone packed too much gunpowder into the cannon. Over the years I had to modify my act since it's not possible to stay as flexible as when was younger. One of my husbands was a drummer so he taught me to play the drums and I changed my act to " Rhythm on a Swing" . Of course since I was playing the drum and it takes both hands-- I needed a way to hang on to the trapeze. I've always had weak ankles so I used neck and then my teeth. I've enclosed a picture so you'll understand how much skill this took. This was all working out great and I thought I'd be able to stay with the circus for life..but my teeth just couldn't stand the pressure and I had to give up my job. The circus is a wonderful life...but the retirement benefits are terrible. Since I didn't have retirement or a husband to help me, I was really concerned that I might starve. I decided to turn all of my skills with the circus into a second career and I'm now a government consultant. I advise on economics, environmental issues, space exploration and such. In my spare time I teach percussion to students in middle school. For fun I go to Gage Park and swing.... I just feel so at home on a swing and close to the zoo animals. I do have 3 children and 3 grandchildren and they love having a grandma who will swing with them ! I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at the reunion and hearing all about what YOU have been doing since our days at West !!

There is just a short time left until your classmates will gather in Kansas to renew old friendships, make new friends, visit old neighborhoods and sort through memories. Most of us have many wonderful memories of high school and we all have the ones where we felt " left out" and like we didn't fit in...it was part of being a teenager.   We remember the music and the sports and the dances and clothes and some of us even remember the classes !    Reunions are a time of reflection...and a time to share those memories...both good and not so good with others who " knew you when".  Don't miss this opportunity to be a part of the 45th reunion.

It's not too late to let us know you're coming....but we really do need to know right away so we can have enough food and beverages.  Please download your reservation sheet from the FB page or reply and I'll email you a copy.  If you have already sent in your reservation.....thank you...we're looking forward to seeing you.

One of the things that many of us took for granted when we were young was how lovely Kansas is.   We were so busy at school and playing sports and going to the drive in or working on our cars....that we missed the magic that was just outside the city limits.   I thought you all might enjoy this video and music....please take about 5 minutes and sit quietly with a cool beverage and enjoy the pictures of the place many of us call home.  When you're here to visit....be sure to take a drive...off of I-70....and experience what you may have missed 45 years ago.

THIS AND THAT....

Yikkes.....it's HOT....but fall is just around the corner...so we'll make it !    It seems that this blog....just isn't the same now that Facebook is a part of our lives.   Several of us have tried to get it " going " but there just are not enough of us posting here to make it fun.  I will continue to post important information but I'm not going to post everything here....that is on Facebook.   If you're not on FB I'd encourage you to join and check it often.  If you don't you'll miss the many bios and pictures and the banter.   We encourage you to join in...post your bio...share pictures...and be a part of the reunion whether or not you are able to attend. If you have not sent in your registration for the 45th reunion....it's not too late...but we need to know you're coming...asap.   We have to let our food people know how many to expect and we'd hate to run out of food either night.   Please e-mail one of us and let us know you're attending and send in your form and money right away !   Please don't think no one will miss you......or that you'll feel out of place because you've not kept in touch with anyone.....or....the worst excuse....but one we hear..." there were too many cliques in high school"...   !!!    Really .....many of your classmates felt like that...it's part of being a teenager.....even the so called " in crowd" ..felt awkward !!   So keep up with the blog if you like and add things here....or better yet....join in on the fun on Facebook.   Hope to see you all in a month.   Have a safe Labor Day weekend.

Music-Don't You Forget About Me

We have had several requests for a place to talk about music. One of our classmates...Jim Clements has been entertaining a small group of us by sharing u-tubes and comments for the last 4 1/2 years. Now we'll let him put some of them here.  Please chime in with your comments and memories or add u-tubes of your own.  Between Jim and Marshall and other classmates with a love of music and a musical background it will be fun to see the diversity in musical tastes.

So what have you done....perhaps since 1968....or maybe in the last few years that you thought you couldn't...or shouldn't ...or wouldn't do ??    What did you do that you may have thought you were " too old" to do or try ???    Can you inspire the rest of us to step out of our comfort zone ??   Can you share what you've learned lately that enriched your life ?    It's ok if what you tried didn't work out as you wanted it to...or thought it would.  It's even ok to share something you tried ...that failed.  We can learn from that too. Share your experiences....share your adventures and pictures whether they were in your backyard or on the other side of the world. 

We want  your stories and your comments or your suggestions.   We all want to have a life well lived....and the time to make sure we have that life...is NOW.

Remember all the  " stuff " you wrote in classmates yearbooks ?   NO???  Gee....that's too bad...because THEY have it...and it lives forever...( almost as bad as Facebook)...Grab your yearbooks....and share some of the great things your friends wrote in your yearbook.   ( NOT the really filthy stuff.).....share their name ...or not......whichever you prefer.....now go dig out those books and find your reading glasses......

T-WEST TALENT

Topeka West Talent !

 We all know that there were a lot of talented " kids" in our class.   They must be extra talented now that they've had 45 years to practice !  We want to have you share your talents at the talent segment part of the event on Saturday night.  Sing, dance, play an instrument, mime, juggle, card tricks...we don't care...serious, funny or darn right bizarre !!  Don't volunteer here....e-mail me privately at princessofkeene@hotmail.com so we keep it a secret until you make your debut. Do something by yourself or gather a group and come up with a skit !  If you know someone too shy to volunteer...give me their contact info and I'll harass them..and never reveal my source !! Anything goes....from a minute or two ....till a little longer but you can't hog the stage....we want to feature lots of " acts".  Please volunteer....this is no time to be shy...or you may be stuck with Lauri Rivers and I playing the accordion.  She my have gotten better...but I didn't !!!

Let's Get This Party Started

182 days left ..give or take a day or two...until the reunion. NO MORE excuses that I'll start my exercise program " tomorrow" !!This is my new workout outfit.....can you believe all the other ladies in my zumba class last night were wearing boring black ??? ( the angle of this is a bit off..I'm not quite that wide...well maybe I am..but I won't be by September ! )   Sooo.....let's get the party started...share what's new in your life...new hobby, new grandkid stories, new vacation plans, new lies about your golf game or how big of a fish you caught ??? Any ideas for activities you'd like to see happen at this coming reunion....???   Our venues are great....The Garden House at Lake Shawnee is beautiful and has AC and heat depending on the day.....Country Club for Saturday night is very nice but casual so you can wear your dress up clothes or  cut-offs if you want ! If you haven't sent in your reservation and money please do so ASAP so we can start planning for food and beverages.   DON'T TELL YOURSELF YOU'LL SEE EVERYONE AT THE 50TH.....COME THIS TIME.... We're not spring chickens...we may not be able to ROCK & ROLL in 5 more years !!

45th Reunion -Here We Go Again

So...here we are again..... 
Seems like it was just a short time ago many of us met at Lake Shawnee and the Ramada for our 40th reunion.  Still......it's time to start planning our get together for our 45 th.  Several of us have been meeting and gathering feedback from as many classmates as possible for reunion ideas.  Many suggested that we look at a fall date this time since most of us are not tied to summer vacation for our kids anymore and since the Kansas heat can be pretty oppressive in the summer ! ( we got lucky 4 years ago).

So our 45th reunion is planned for September 27th and 28th of 2013.  Only 11 months away.  Please put it on your calendar NOW.  We're still working out details and will share as they become available but what we do know is that we're meeting at the Garden House at Lake Shawnee on Friday night. This is where we met last time and it's a lovely location.  Great outdoor areas to chat but a nice enclosed spot with air conditioning and or heat !  On Saturday night we'll be gathering at the former Shawnee Country Club (now run by Great Life) at 29th and Adams.  This is a beautiful venue.  Large two level  room with lots of glass overlooking the golf course and plenty of outdoor tables and patios.  There will be plenty of room to mingle and visit. Both locations have ample parking and are easily accessible.  We will have golf at Shawnee Country Club on Saturday morning.   There will be time to visit Topeka West for those who wish to do so. We will try to get some group discounts at a couple of hotels for our out of town classmates.

Rather than creating a new blog...we decided to just continue with this one...so those who want to look back...or who may have missed it 4 years ago can look back at the fun we had !  Some of it is touching, some informative and some quite funny ! Remember to click on comments after each post to see what was said....but PLEASE don't add anymore information or comments there.   We'll start new posts for this reunion so only add comments to posts that say 45th !! 

Rumor has it that Vancouver Jan has had a mishap since we were last in touch with her.  Apparently her pole was broken,  she suffered  a knee injury and her  costumes have had to be altered to fit her new figure. !! We'll have updates as we move ahead but we have heard that the part of the pole that could be saved was remade into a trapeze.  She always was such an inventive girl. In the last 4 years it's we've been made aware that Vancouver Jan is not our only celebrity.  We've heard that for the 45th " Elton Jim" will make an appearance and who knows how many other talented classmates may show up.   You won't want to miss this reunion......these  "stars" are  getting older they may not be around for the 50th !!

Turn out the lights ....the partys over. Well actually that's not true....and the party will never be over as long as there are a few of the "kids" from the Class of "68" that make time to get together.

We ....on the committee hope you had a really nice time. We had fun this weekend and we had almost as much fun these last months planning. Most went as planned....some did not...but that's to be expected. We have lots of people to thank and we will probably miss a few and have to add later...but here goes. First of all we want to thank each of you for helping. Although as a committee we spent lots of time "searching" for lost souls.....you may not realize that lots of classmates "fed" us information and suggestions. We would never have been able to find some folks without your help. We want to thank Kirk Nystrom for the tender words that he spoke at the memorial to our deceased classmates. (Kirk...what you wrote and your delivery was perfect..) There were a lot of moist eyes during that time and that's as it should be. We want to thank Janine for sharing her lovely voice and for leading us in singing. Music always adds such a special feeling. We want to thank Marshall for being our "announcer" he did a great job of passing along information and running our contests. We want to thank Pam(td's friend) for taking pictures and helping carry and clean...and the other committee "significant others "that helped in so many ways....especially Penny and Mark. We want to say a really special thanks to Roger Wood. He did an amazing job of taking our pictures. Without him we have some good pictures to share...but with him we will have some great ones.

You can add your "post reunion" comments here. If you have not posted your bio...go ahead and do that in the area for "The last 40 years". ..it's never too late. We will keep the blog going as long as it is being used. It's free and I don't think it has a life span. However, there are many of you that are much more high tech. and we hope that maybe one of you would be willing to help us set up a new website that has more features. This blog really is pretty elementary but all that I (TerryD) know how to do...so please...someone...help!!!????

We would like your comments and suggestions for the next reunion or any future activities that we could plan......but fyi.. NO anonymous criticisms...I'll just remove them. It would also be very helpful that if you have a complaint that you also offer a solution. And...please be kind!!!

Speaking of anonymous.....in case you were not told, the following is the explanation for some pretty crazy characters...
Vancouver Jan was ...Jan Pipkin because she made the bad mistake of not posting her bio ...so we made one up for her and posted it......she was horrified at first but then was a good sport and played along. Terry Brumm "created" her...Elaine and TD embellished a bit. VJ needed a boyfriend so Terry D made up Under the Covers Man.....TB embellished. After that both Terrys just switched back and forth writing additional comments. Lester was created by Elaine N. .....her very creative spelling made him quite endearing. On Friday night Jan was VJ, TD was Lester and TB was UTCM. It was also revealed on Friday night that LennyD was Scott Kennedy and Alcoholanon was Mike D. Charlie will not admit it but he is hiding his creative writing skills...several of the really funny anonymous comments were from his computer.. We hope these characters made the blog a little more fun...it's interesting that even the committee did not know who some of these guys were until Friday!! We appreciate everyones tolerance for borderline bad taste and our strange sense of humor!!! ( don't blame the whole committee for a few with no class)

Some of us were talking about adding a comment here, on occasion to get the Topeka area classmates together. There is no reason that you all can't do the same...... feel free to use this site for that. We're fairly sure Bobos had a good weekend..we hope you liked your pie.

I don't think that we had an "official" class book so if those of you that have that info would share with us for our records we would greatly appreciate it. As in the past...we will not give out private info without your permission. BE SURE to let us know of changes to your info...especially e-mail...it's the best way to keep in touch. So....for some this was a life changing weekend/ event. We hope everything goes well. For some, you found out that your fear of "not fitting in" was not valid. You fit in just because you are you and you are part of us. Some of you that bragged about the great fishing or skiing or sites in your area are probably going to have lots of company in the future.....we may hold you to that "come on down" that you said after a few drinks!!!

We were blessed with lovely weather. Had you come on Thursday night you would have been greeted with pouring rain and wind and we would have been crammed in the shelter. As it was we enjoyed the lovely area, flowers, lake and silver moon reflecting on the water.

The biggest and most important "thank you" goes to you all. No matter how much "party planning" happens....it's not much fun if no kids show up to play. So thank you all so much for coming and talking, and laughing, and dancing, and posing for pictures, and eating, and hula hooping, and making it fun just by your presence. Lets keep in touch.

We will try to have at least one suggestion every couple of months but PLEASE feel free to post anything that you hear of in the area. Welcome Topeka West High School Class of 1968. We have created this webpage (blog) to keep you informed about the 40th Reunion planned for June 20-21, 2008. It's also a great way for you all to connect with old, old, old friends ! Remember if you like to read about your old friends and classmates it's only fair that YOU post information about yourself and what you've been doing for the last 40 years!!! It's ok to brag a little...or make up a little...who would know??If you don't remember high school...it's ok..after all it was the 60s! Add your comments and what you do remember and maybe one of your classmates can fill you in about what you missed!!!

To see the comments your classmates have left just click on the "comments" at the bottom of each Topic or "post" . Read what your friends have said and then add your comment. To do this, type in the "Leave your comment" white box....it will hold all you want to say. Then you have to do the word verification to make sure you are not a terrorist or something. Then you "choose an identity" by clicking on whatever circle you choose. Most of us have checked the "name/url" one and just put in our nickname or first name and last initial or whatever you want..leave "url" blank...what does that mean anyway??. (I have no idea what the other options mean or how they work but if you want to use one of those options ..live it up.)Don't forget to hit "Publish " or it will not be "saved". You can add comments as often as you would like....the point is to have fun and get to know each other again. (If you add something and then really don't want it there I can make it go away. Just let me know.)

PLEASE contact anyone that you know from the class and let them know about the reunion and this site. Don't assume that we have contacted them....we're missing LOTS of classmate's information and we don't want to leave anyone out.
